ABVP leader goes on fast, seeks probe into girl's suicide

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, FEB. 10. The ABVP State secretary, Mr. K. Sudhakar, began an indefinite fast in front of the parishad office here on Saturday, demanding a judicial enquiry into the circumstances which led to suicides by students of residential colleges, particularly the Sri Chaitanya Residential College at Vijayawada.

The State BJP also expressed grave concern over the suicides in corporate residential colleges and demanded that these incidents be probed by a High Court Judge.

In a statement, Prof. S.V. Seshagiri Rao, State vice-president and Mr. G. Kishan Reddy, official spokesman, said six students committed suicide in the last five months while three students were missing for the past 18 months.

They said the appointment of an enquiry committee by the Intermediate Board Secretary, Mr. M. Srinivasa Rao, was only an eyewash. They alleged that the grave irregularities in the corporate colleges were being hushed up by the Secretary.

Mahila samakhya plea

The Andhra Pradesh Mahila Samakhya general secretary, Ms. Pasya Padma, demanded a thorough probe into the circumstances leading to the death of Ms. Suma Reddy at the Sri Chaitanya Residential College. The enquiry should also cover issues raised in the letters left by two other girl students, Vanipriya and Suhasini, who committed suicide.

She also demanded that the State Mahila Commission set up a committee to study the functioning of the residential college and social welfare hostels for girls.
