Medical students attacked

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, FEB. 10. As many as 10 students of Medical College were injured when an armed gang of more than 30 persons, alleged to be SFI activists, stormed the First Hostel for Medical College students late on Friday night.

Police identified the seriously injured students as Sabari, Anoop, Hamlet, Nandakumar, Sajan and Manoj Mani. All are associated with the pro-KSU(I) Students Against Politics in Campus (SAPIC) union at the Medical College.

Officials said that the gang, armed with soda bottles, hockey sticks and crow-bars, had attacked the hostel inmates at around 10.45 p.m. Police said the miscreants singled out the rooms in which the SAPIC activists were staying. The rooms of these students were ransacked and the inmates beaten up.

Police said the incident was sequel to an altercation between the SFI activists and SAPIC workers during the counting of votes to the Medical College Union.

The Medical College police have registered cases of trespass, criminal assault and rioting against M.V. Rajesh, Sailesh, Arun, Silpi, Binu Jose, Ranjith Lal, Arun. B. Nair, Alexander, Christy, Aneesh Krishna and Ameesh.

Meanwhile, the SAPIC has alleged in a press note here that the police was not taking any action to arrest those responsible for the incident.
