Probe ordered into attack on Ghising
SILIGURI, FEB. 12. The West Bengal Home Secretary, Mr. Sourin
Roy, announced today a `special investigation team' to probe the
attempt on the life of the Darjeeling Gorkha Hill Council, (DGHC)
chairman, Mr. Subash Ghising, and killing of three persons near
Kurseong on Saturday.
The issue of the attack on Mr. Ghishing was today raised in the
West Bengal Assembly by the Congress, as the Trinamool Congress
and the BJP demanded a probe the CBI into the incident while
observing sit-in-demonstration in the lobby of the House.
The opposition Congress leader, Mr. Sougata Roy, in a calling
attention notice demanded a statement by the Chief Minister, Mr.
Buddhadev Bhattacharjee, on the incident. Responding to Roy's
demand, the State Parliamentary Affairs Minister, Mr. Probodh
Chandra Sinha, told the House that the Chief Minister would make
a statement on the incident on February 15.
Criticising the State Government, the TC leader, Mr. Sobhandev
Chattopaddhyay, said the incident proved total failure of the
police to protect people.
Bandh hits life
The GNLF-sponsored indefinite bandh paralysed normal life in the
3 sub-divisions of Darjeeling, while the Himalayan State of
Sikkim remained cut off for the second day today.
The bandh was called in protest against ambush on a carcade of
the GNLF chief on Saturday. The District Magistrate of
Darjeeling, Mr. Anil Varma told newsmen that the bandh was total
and there was no report of any untoward incident today. He said
adequate security arrangements had been made for maintaining law
and order.
