Pak. has no aggressive designs: Tarar

By B. Muralidhar Reddy

ISLAMABAD, FEB. 21. The Pakistan President, Mr. Rafiq Tarar, has said that Pakistan was in favour of the resolution of the Kashmir conflict through peaceful means.

Addressing the inaugural function of historic Sibi mela in Balochistan, Mr. Tarar said Pakistan has no aggressive designs against any country and its nuclear strength is purely for its defence needs.

``That is why we are stressing on use of peaceful means to resolve Kashmir issue. We want to spend our resources on the progress and prosperity of our people instead of spending on war machines. But at the same time we can't remain oblivious of our enemy's designs'', he said.

In his first interview to Pakistani media, the Indian High Commissioner, Mr. Vijay K. Nambiar, has said that dialogue between India and Pakistan can start soon, provided India gets concrete evidence of a commitment of the Pakistani authorities to control terrorism.

In an interview to the English daily, The News, Mr. Nambiar, in response to a question on the optimism of Gen. Pervez Musharraf about the resumption of dialogue, said, ``there are similar sentiments on the Indian side to develop a dialogue process based on enlarging our area of understanding and building a relationship afresh''. Mr. Nambiar said that sharp increase in activities of some militant outfits operating from Pakistan has vitiated the atmosphere.
