Will abide by HC decision on EVMs: EC
By Our Staff Reporter
NAGERCOIL, FEB. 21. The Election Commissioner, Mr. T. S.
Krishnamoorthy, has said the Election Commission will abide by
the decision taken by the Madras High Court on the issue of using
electronic voting machines (EVMs) for the coming Assembly
elections in Tamil Nadu.
At a press conference at Kanyakumari today, in response to a
query on the AIADMK general secretary, Ms. Jayalalitha's petition
in the High Court opposing the use of EVMs in the Assembly poll,
he said the Election Commission would take a decision on the
issue as per the direction of the High Court.
To another question, Mr. Krishnamoorthy said the schedule for the
coming Assembly elections in Tamil Nadu and four other States
would be finalised by next month.
Referring to the ongoing work of distribution of electors' photo
identity cards (EPIC), he said the EPICs had already been given
to more than 70 per cent of the eligible voters in the State.
He said there was no bar on the caste-based parties to contest
the elections.
