Rights panel seeks details on torture of woman

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI, FEB. 21. Describing as ``gruesome and diabolic'' the alleged torture of a woman for dowry at Santhiranallur, near Dharmapuri recently, the State Human Rights Commission, Tamil Nadu (SHRCTN), has sought details from the authorities concerned for conducting an enquiry.

In the communication addressed to the authorities, including the Secretaries, Public (Human Rights) and Home departments and the Director-General of Police, the SHRCTN Chairperson, Mr. Justice S. Nainar Sundaram, referred to press reports about the incident and said ``nothing could be classified as extreme violation of human rights than these incidents.'' The Commission could not close its eyes to such violations.

The incident brought ignominy to the police's Anti- Dowry Cell. The cell's woman police personnel in the locale should move around the vicinity and watch any suspicious circumstance indicating the attitude of the family members of the harassed woman. The Commission was not much interested in finding fault with all the police personnel concerned who dealt with the case. If there was any negligence on their part, the Commission would certainly take action.

The Commission has sought the details for conducting an enquiry as to how the police personnel concerned omitted to prevent the harassment and torture of the woman.
