Police to go slow before imposing curbs
By Our Special Correspondent
HYDERABAD, FEB. 23. The city police are receiving representations
on its proposal to ban the movement of slow moving traffic on
main thoroughfares before imposing restrictions on movements of
tractors, push-carts, cyclerickshaws and bullock carts.
Stating this at a press conference here on Friday, the Police
Commissioner, Mr. P. Ramulu, said some hospitals had represented
to him on the necessity to use tractors to transport the oxygen
cylinders. He said this being a genuine reason, exemption could
be given to such tractors.
On the High Court judgment turning down his order banning the
movement of seven-seater autorickshaws in the twin cities, he
said the traffic wing had collected eight different judgments
given in other States which explicitly said regulation meant
prohibiting movement of certain vehicles. Based on the verdict,
the city police would only regulate the movement of seven-seaters
on some roads. However, a decision in this regard was yet to be
taken.
Replying to a query on the killing of an undertrial prisoner,
Attaf Hussain, Mr. Ramulu said six persons had surrendered
themselves to the police. He had already suspended three
constables of the city Armed Reserve for dereliction of duty.
It was decided to entrust the job of monitoring the movement of
undertrials from jails to different courts to the Additional
Commissioner of Police and the DCP, Special Branch. Whenever an
important undertrial is taken out of the jail, a Sub-Inspector
would be posted to escort him to the court, he added.
