Rao's team in lead

CHENNAI, FEB. 23. C.V. Rao's team (99 VP) from Vizag and current National champion Well Knit (90) from Chennai were comfortably placed first and second respectively at the end of first leg matches in the double round- robin league bridge championship.

The meet has been organised by the Tamil Nadu Bridge Association under the auspices of the Bridge Federation of India.

The tournament opened with six teams all having Life Masters, the highest category of merit.

Out of five Rao's team won the first four against Boaz (25-2), Gupta (17-13), Formidables (22-4) and Nest International (21-9). However it went down to Well Knit (14-16).

Well Knit had a bad start when it went down 11-19 against Nest International. The team recovered scoring 79 VPs in the remaining matches played against Formidables (23 VPs), Boaz (5), Gupta (25) and C.V. Rao.

Nest International with 73, Gupta with 69, Formidables with 64 and Boaz with 51 were placed in that order.

There will be 10 rounds of matches after which the first two in the order of merit will figure in the final consisting of 42 boards to be played in three sessions of 14 boards each.

The results of the pairs (Life Masters) played on Wednesday as a prelude to the Life Masters team event for the P.C. Goenka trophy:

1. C.R. Badirnath and Uttam Gupta - 136; 2. A.S. Gupta and V. Krishnan - 124; 3. Farooq Dadabhoy and V.R. Veerappan - 123; 4. K. Krishna Kumar and R. Krishnan - 110; 5. T.M. Suryanarayanana and P.D. Boaz - 107; 6. R.V. Ramani and R.V. Subramaniam - 95; 7. SPJ Albuquerque and Kalyani Isvaran - 95; 8. R. Srikrishnan and T.R. Krishnan - 86; 9. R. Kumar and T.C. Krishna - 79.
