Quake rumbles through nations
An earthquake measuring up to 6.7 on the Richter
scale rocked Central Asia today, panicking residents from Kabul
to New Delhi and prompting many to flee their homes.
Seismologists said the quake's epicentre was in northern
Afghanistan near the Tajikistan border.
Delhi feels a 'distant shock'
Almost a month after the high-intensity
earthquake that caused large-scale devastation in Gujarat,
another quake of moderate intensity shook many parts of northern
India this morning.

We will block BALCO deal: Jogi
The controversy over the Central Government's
decision to sell BALCO shows no sign of abating. A day after the
Prime Minister, Mr. A.B. Vajpayee, indicated that the deal would
go through, the Chattisgarh Chief Minister, Mr. Ajit Jogi, today
said his Government would bring in an official resolution in the
Assembly to block the deal which, he said, reeked of corruption.
Minister quits
The Radhabinod Koijam Government in Manipur was
jolted today when the Health Minister, Mr. Nimachand Luwang, said
he had resigned and claimed two other Ministers also followed
suit.
'Alternative fuel ready'
The working of the Tarapur Nuclear Power
Plant will not be affected even if Russia stops supply of fuel,
the Director of the BARC, Mr. Anil Kakodkar, has said.
German held
Police today detained a 38-year-old German
national carrying a knife when he was entering into ``Vajra Vidya
Sansthan'' in Sarnath, near here, where the Buddhist monk, Ugyen
Trinley Dorji, was staying, according to sources here.

The annual inflation rate zoomed up by 0.36
