Naxals gun down SI

By Our Staff Reporter

MAHABUBNAGAR, FEB. 25. The Amangal Sub-inspector, Mr. S. Hanumantha Reddy, was shot dead by armed extremists on Sunday evening near Suryalakshmi Cotton Mills on the outskirts of Amangal. The SI, accompanied by three constables, was examining an accident site when the extremists numbering about four opened fire from the crowd and escaped. The constables escaped with minor injuries, but the officer died on the spot.

According to reports, two persons riding a scooter died in a road accident on the Hyderabad-Srisailam highway around 3 pm when they were hit by a four-wheeler. On receiving the information, the police team reached the spot to examine the spot and conduct an inquest. A crowd of curious onlookers gathered there when the police were engaged in recording the measurements at 5.30 pm. Suddenly, three to four armed men, said to be members of the Kalwakurthy dalam of the People's War Group, emerged from the crowd and opened fire resulting in the death of the SI. The constables could not retaliate as armed men took the advantage of the human shield. The CI, Mr. Muthyam Reddy, and the Madugula SI, Mr. Jagan, rushed to the spot.

Mr. Hanumantha Reddy belonged to the batch of 1996 and was father of two daughters aged three and two. After initial posting at Lingal, the services of Mr. Reddy were terminated one and a half years ago on the ground that he could not complete a subject during the training. He was reinstated and posted to Amangal seven months ago.
