East Bengal continues winning streak
By Our Sports Reporter
KOLKATA, FEB. 25. Kingfisher East Bengal defeated Mahindra United
2-0 in a ninth round match to consolidate its position on top of
table in the V National Football League here at the Salt Lake
Stadium on Sunday.
Keeping its winning run intact, the home team netted 22 points
from its nine outings retaining its position on top while the
Mumbai visitor crashed to its first `away' defeat to remain at 10
points from nine matches.
The home team did not impress much with its showing against an
overtly defensive Mahindra team which was plagued by injuries to
five of its regulars. The first session seemed to be an
ineffective exercise for East Bengal, which failed to breach the
opposition defence despite having a greater control over the
proceedings.
The first session would have remained barren but a miscued header
by the Mahindra defender Christopher Kem struck the suicide note
for the visitor. Christopher, in a haste to clear a goalmouth
floater, saw his attempted clearance grossly mistimed as the ball
sailed into his own goal beating custodian Virender Singh in the
36th minute. The gifted goal gave all the scope for the
struggling home team which built on the lead in the second
session.
East Bengal attacked more purposefully in the second session and
had its right-back Surkumar Singh scoring the insurance goal in
the 77th minute, sealing the fate of the visitor.
