Fiji Govt. quits
By Amit Baruah
SINGAPORE, MARCH 7.
Fiji's ``interim'' Prime Minister, Mr. Laisenia Qarase, today
submitted the resignation of his ``Government'' to the President,
Mr. Josefa Iloilo, ahead of an all-crucial meeting of the Great
Council of Chiefs which begins in Suva tomorrow. Mr. Qarase's
resignation comes six days after Fiji's Court of Appeal declared
his Government illegal and said that ``abrogated'' 1997
Constitution continued to remain the law of the land. Reports
from Suva also quoted the ousted Prime Minister, Mr. Mahendra
Chaudhry, as saying that the President should call for elections.
