Plan to involve artists to attract tourists
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, MARCH 25 The State Government is thinking of taking
artists to different places of tourist interest, like
Nagarjunasagar and Araku Valley, and asking them to put up their
work to attract more tourists.
This was stated here on Sunday by Mrs. Chandana Khan, Secretary,
Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture Department, while
inaugurating an all-India artists' camp at Shilparamam crafts
village at Madhapur near here.
If the artists agree to this proposal the State Government would
meet their expenses of travel and stay at the places where they
would create and display their art work, she told the gathering
which comprised painters from Kolkata, Chennai and New Delhi.
The Government, Mrs. Khan said, was prepared to allot land and
provide other infrastructure facilities for a permanent art
gallery here. She said the city already had four or five
galleries, but a permanent one would benefit the people, who
could take a look at the objects on display.
She described artists' camps as a growing phenomenon and said
such common platforms of artists would serve the cause of
promoting visual arts. The Government had taken upon itself the
task of supporting such camps, which was performed in the past by
kings.
The week-long camp is being organised to mark the diamond jubilee
year of the Hyderabad Art Society. It is sponsored by the S.J.K.
Steel Corporation Ltd., Hyderabad. Mrs. Khan and other artists
taking part in the camp put the brush on the canvas to mark the
inauguration.
Mr. Jitin Kumar, managing director of the corporation, later
inaugurated an exhibition of paintings of members of the society.
Over 45 paintings on view will be open for public till March 31.
Mr. G. Kishan Rao, Director of Tourism and Special Officer of
Shilparamam, was among those present at the inauguration of the
camp.
Among the artists attending the camp are Ashok Mallik, Aditya
Basak (both of Kolkata), Muralidharan (Chennai) and Rajesh Sharma
(Delhi). Among the senior artists are K. Seshagiri Rao, K.
Rajaih, P.R. Raju, Narendra Rai, G.Y. Giri, R. Subash Babu and T.
Vaikuntam (all from Hyderabad).
