FIIs net buyers in equities

MUMBAI, MARCH 25. Foreign institutional investors (FIIs) were net buyers in equities at Rs. 473.8 crores ($101.9 million) and net sellers in debt at Rs. 31.9 crores ($6.9 million) for the week ended March 23.

FIIs were net buyers in equities on all the trading days except on March 20, when they remained net sellers to the tune of Rs. 57.1 crores ($12.3 million), according to the data available with the Securities and Exchange Board of India.

At the close of the week, the BSE benchmark was at 3625.28, sharply down by 110.46 points as against last weekend close of 3745.74.

Right from first day of the week, equities exhibited a dismal performance on a host of bad news like renewed apprehensions over payment crisis, prevailing political situation arising from the Tehelka expose and the global Meltdown.

The SEBI data said on March 19 and 23, FIIs were net buyers in equities at Rs. 199.2 crores ($42.8 million) and Rs. 131.5 crores ($28.3 million) respectively.

On the debt front, the foreign funds were net sellers on March 19 (Rs. 0.1 crores), March 20 (Rs. 16 crores - $3.4 million) and March 22 (Rs. 68.6 crores - $14.8 million).

According to the data available on mutual funds for the four days beginning March 19 shows that they were net sellers in equities and debt at Rs. 149.27 crores and Rs. 2.26 crores respectively.
