Clash averted in Jaffna prison
By Nirupama Subramanian
COLOMBO, MARCH 26. A serious law and order breakdown inside the
Jaffna prison was averted with the shifting out of 14 soldiers
being held there after Tamil detainees in the same prison
attempted to storm the section in which the soldiers were, the
Government said today.
The soldiers were transferred to military custody for 72 hours by
order of a special magistrate on Sunday morning when the tension
in the prison reached crisis point.
The soldiers were being held in the jail for their suspected
involvement in the murder of eight Tamil civilians in the
Mirusivil area of the Jaffna peninsula last December.
