By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MARCH 28. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI)
has frozen five bank accounts belonging to Mr. Vincent George,
his wife, Mrs. Lily George, and his two children. The CBI
registered a case on March 20 under the Prevention of Corruption
Act against Mr. George, private secretary to the Congress(I)
president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi.
Well-placed sources today said that of the five accounts, one
belonged to Mr. George, one each to his wife and daughter, Ms.
Priyana, and two to his son, Mr. Dennis. They said that nearly
Rs. 29 lakhs were locked in the five accounts.
The frozen accounts include three in the State Bank of India's
Moti Nagar branch - number 15200 in the name of Mrs. Lily, 15684
in the name of Ms. Priyana and 15452 in the name of Mr. Dennis.
He had another account (13711) in the Diplomatic Enclave branch
of Canara Bank, while 5565 in the SBI Ansari Nagar branch
belonged to Mr. George.
According to the FIR, Mr. George was a public servant between
November 1984 and November 1989 as private secretary to the then
Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Again, between December 1989 to
December 1990, he was private secretary to Rajiv Gandhi as Leader
of the Opposition. The FIR alleged that as a public servant his
assets were beyond the known sources of his legitimate income
during the period.
