Vincent George's accounts frozen

NEW DELHI, MARCH 28. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has frozen five bank accounts belonging to Mr. Vincent George, his wife, Mrs. Lily George, and his two children. The CBI registered a case on March 20 under the Prevention of Corruption Act against Mr. George, private secretary to the Congress(I) president, Ms. Sonia Gandhi.

Well-placed sources today said that of the five accounts, one belonged to Mr. George, one each to his wife and daughter, Ms. Priyana, and two to his son, Mr. Dennis. They said that nearly Rs. 29 lakhs were locked in the five accounts.

The frozen accounts include three in the State Bank of India's Moti Nagar branch - number 15200 in the name of Mrs. Lily, 15684 in the name of Ms. Priyana and 15452 in the name of Mr. Dennis. He had another account (13711) in the Diplomatic Enclave branch of Canara Bank, while 5565 in the SBI Ansari Nagar branch belonged to Mr. George.

According to the FIR, Mr. George was a public servant between November 1984 and November 1989 as private secretary to the then Prime Minister, Rajiv Gandhi. Again, between December 1989 to December 1990, he was private secretary to Rajiv Gandhi as Leader of the Opposition. The FIR alleged that as a public servant his assets were beyond the known sources of his legitimate income during the period.
