SAI sails into quarterfinals
By Our Special Correspondent
KOLKATA, APRIL 1: Sports Authority of India (SAI), Eastern
Centre, booked a place in the quarterfinal league of the Indian
Oil Servo 106th Beighton Cup hockey tournament here on Sunday.
SAI beat Corps of Signals 4-2 at the CCFC ground to join the four
seeded teams.
In the other matches of the day, Calcutta Electric Supply
Corporation (CESC) shocked Bombay Customs by the odd goal in
three while Calcutta Customs eliminated Tata Steel, Jamshedpur,
by the odd goal in five. Both the winners moved into the pre-
quarterfinals.
SAI boys, putting up a brave display against Signalmen from Army,
scored all the four goals through penalty corner. Despite losing
five of its boys from last year's team, this SAI side showed
remarkable maturity and scored first in the 10th minute through
Manoj Kujur.
CoS reacted strongly by equalising the advantage four minutes
later through Prem following a penalty corner.
SAI went up in the 30th minute through Atul Tirkey before
halftime and got the insurance goal in 53rd minute through Edmond
Kerketta.
N. S. Salaviya reduced in the 58th minute but SAI scored its
fourth goal in the 66th minute through Manoj Kujur.
CESC struck through Albert Tete (penalty corner) and Anil Maity
in the 16th and 46th minutes respectively as Bombay Customs got
the lone goal in the 18th minute through Savio Naik. CESC will
take on ONGC in the pre-quarterfinals on Monday.
Calcutta Customs shot ahead in the 20th minute thanks to Satinder
Singh and got the second goal two minutes inside the second half
through Ayaz Ahmed's penalty stroke conversion.
R. Dang got Tata Steel's first reducer in the 40th and T. Barla
got the second in the 55th.
In between Rajender Singh got the third goal for local team in
the 46th minutes.
Calcutta Customs will clash with CISF in the pre- quarters
tomorrow, while in the other pre-quarterfinal match, Sikh
Regimental Centre, Ramgarh, will meet South Central Railway.
