MGR Kazhagam may contest on free symbol
By Our Special Correspondent
CHENNAI, APRIL 5. The MGR Kazhagam, which has been given two
seats in the DMK-led front, today announced that it would contest
on a free symbol if the Election Commission insisted that a party
symbol be made available only to the party members.
The MGR Kazhagam president, Mr. R.M. Veerappan, said his party
did not want to lose its identity by its nominees contesting as
candidates of the DMK.
But, it did not have objection to fighting on the DMK symbol if
the Commission decided to allow recognised parties to give their
election symbol to non-members.
Talking to reporters, Mr. Veerappan said the MGR Kazhagam would
ask for a few more seats from the DMK. However, there would be no
change in the party stand of supporting the DMK-led front.
Smaller parties had managed more seats than what the MGR Kazhagam
got and the party volunteers were agitated over this, he said.
