Muharram procession passes off peacefully
By Our Staff Reporter
HYDERABAD, APRIL 5. The 10th day of Muharram, `Youm-e-Ashoora',
was observed with all solemnity in the city on Thursday. The
Bibi-ka-Alam procession, the highlight of the day, passed off
peacefully. The police made elaborate security arrangements on
the procession route.
The Bibi-ka-Alam was taken out on a caprisioned elephant from
Dabeerpura in the afternoon. The procession wended its way
through Kaman Shaikh Faize, Itebar Chowk, Kotla Alijah, Chowk
Maidan Khan, Charminar, Gulzar Houze, Panjeshah, Miralam Mandi,
Purani Haveli, Dar-ul-Shifa and ended at Chaderghat.
Members of the Shia community flagellated themselves with sharp
weapons to mourn the martyrdom of Imam Husain, the grandson of
the Prophet, in the battle of Karbala in Iraq. A large number of
people thronged the procession route and offered `dhattis' to the
Alam.
