NAAC assesses OU departments

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, APRIL 5. The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) today concluded its four-day visit to Osmania University -- the only University in the State to have gone for assessment of all its departments.

Later, addressing a press conference, Prof. A. Gnanam, Chairman, NAAC, said the university had a long way to go in meeting international standards in several aspects. He, however, declined to divulge details of the evaluation.

He said the grading would be given within four weeks and all the criteria to give grades would be taken into account. The NAAC takes aspects like curriculum, teaching, learning and evaluation, research consultancy and extension, infrastructure and learning resources, student support and organisation and management into consideration. The institutions need a minimum of 55 per cent for grading.

He pointed out that some colleges were willing to go in for evaluation since the UGC had made it mandatory to have accreditation for colleges for funding from the 10th plan onwards. However, he felt that since the bulk of funds to the colleges come from the State Government it was better if the Government look into the issue more seriously.
