Naxals active in Chhatisgarh

By Our Staff Correspondent

RAIPUR, APRIL 6. After lying low for a while, naxalites have once again begun their activities in several districts of Chhatisgarh, particularly in Bastar.

The naxalites, who do not accept Bastar as part of Chhatisgarh, have already put up their demand for a separate region. So far the naxalite groups have refrained from indulging in any violence, instead they are concentrating on implementing their public welfare schemes to help the drought-affected people of the region.

According to reports, the Southern Bastar Peoples War Group has formed its own administrative unit for helping the people and protecting them from exploitation. It is said that the organisation has issued threats to the Government employees involved in unfair activities as far as distribution of food grain is concerned. The alleged threats also warn corrupt officials of trial in special court.

The naxalites have even set up a grain bank by collecting grain from the weekly haats of several villages in Southern Bastar. The activists have reportedly made sudden appearances in the weekly markets and driven away traders while asking the locals to donate grain for the grain bank which would be used for distribution among the poor.

Through another diktat issued to the teachers and panchayat secretary, the naxalites have imposed a fine of Rs. 1,000 and Rs. 2,000 per day respectively for absence. Felling of trees has been banned and anyone found guilty of the crime will be fined Rs. 500.

Though the official spokesman has denied that the PWG is running a parallel administration, reports reaching here suggest that the activists have taken up the responsibility of maintenance and construction of dams, ponds, schools and hospitals.
