More on Mylapore
WITH REFERENCE to Bhama Rajagopal's article, "Much ado about
something" in Metroplus dated April 16, K.S. Krishnaswamy writes:
There is a mention that Thiruvalluvar and Thirugnanasambandar
were born in Mylapore. Though it is widely accepted that
Thiruvalluvar was born in Mylapore, certainly Thirugnanasambandar
was born only in Sirkazhi but came to Mylapore on a religious
sojourn and performed a miracle by bringing back to life
Poompavai from the urn containing her ashes.
S. Radhakrishnan is not the first President of India as mentioned
in the article but its second, the first being Dr. Rajendra
Prasad.
S. Varadachari was a judge of the Federal Court of India presided
over by Sir Maurice Gwyer, the other eminent judge being Mohammed
Zafrullah Khan. The Supreme Court came into being after
Independence replacing the Federal Court.
I am not sure whether any King of England was a guest of the
famous advocate S. Srinivasa Iyengar as mentioned in the article.
Perhaps, the author meant the Prince of Wales. But I doubt very
much whether such a staunch nationalist like S. Srinivasa
Iyengar, who became the President of the Indian National
Congress, could entertain him as a guest. I would like to be
enlightened on this point.
About Rukmini Devi, it has been mentioned that she moved from
Mylapore to Thiruvanmiyur to establish the Kalakshetra.
The great lady established the Kalakshetra well within the
precincts of the Theosophical gardens at Adyar in the mid 1930s
and moved it to a very spacious location at Thiruvanmiyur only
after a decade or two after Kalakshetra was established.
