12 die as violence mars Bihar poll

PATNA, APRIL 23. At least 12 persons including a candidate were
killed and over two dozen others injured in violent clashes and
police firings during the fourth phase of the panchayat elections
today. The voter turnout was estimated to be around 65 per cent.
A polling officer, Bisheshwar Lal Das, died of a heart attack in
Saharsa district, where violent clashes claimed five lives,
including that of a candidate in Madhepura.
Police firing took a toll of three lives in separate incidents,
and deaths occuring while manufacturing bombs were put at four,
which the police did not count as poll related. Police fired at
more than 12 places, proving fatal at Saran, Jammui and East
Champaran districts.
Police rounded up more than 1,000 people and seized over 48
firearms and 200 bombs.
