Barpeta AGP candidate's condition serious
Guwahati, April 30. The condition of the AGP candidate from
Barpeta Assembly constituency, Kumar Dipak Das, who was shot at
by suspected ULFA militants, was "serious and he was operated
upon for removal of bullets" from his leg today.
Sources at the Guwahati Medical College and Hospital said that
the former Minister was transferred to the hospital late last
night from Barpeta after the incident and "the bullets lodged in
his right leg were removed successfully but he was still in a
serious condition."
Das and ten others, including his personal security officer
(PSO), were injured in an attack by ULFA militants when he was
addressing an election meeting at Guwakasa village around 9
p.m., police sources in Barpeta said.
The militants, who were among the crowd at the meeting, opened
fire as Das was about to finish his speech. The former Minister's
PSOs retaliated killing two of the militants on the spot while
the others managed to escape in the ensuing melee, the sources
said.
The others seriously injured in the attack included the
candidate's PSO Himjyoti Das and local AGP leaders Satyanath Das,
Parmananda Das and Upen Das.
