U.S. cancels orders for Indian-made berets
WASHINGTON, MAY 2. The United States has cancelled an order for
Indian-made black berets worth about $2 million meant for its
Army due to ``quality problems''.
The orders for 392,000 berets from India were placed with
Northeast Woollen Mills on Rhode Island, U.S., who have a plant
in India, a spokesperson for the Defence Logistics Agency said
today. She said the order was cancelled ``due to production and
quality problems''. Orders for supply of berets from China and
Romania had also been cancelled.
The biggest order for black berets - 615,000 - was in China, and
that was cancelled apparently as a protest against the spy plane
incident over the South China Sea. The announcement of the
cancellation of the order in China came from the Deputy Secretary
of Defence, Mr. Paul Wolfowitz, who said he was directing the
military to reclaim issued (Chinese-made) berets from the troops.
