NDA Govt. will fall soon: Scindia
NEW DELHI, MAY 3. The Congress(I) has said that it would ``not
stand aloof'' in the event of the fall of the Vajpayee
Government, which it feels ``cannot survive too long'', but the
party's role is ``something to be worked out''.
The party did not rule out the possibility of getting help from
current adversaries in the Third Front but felt the situation was
``too nebulous and in a flux''.
``We are not in the toppling game. But if this Government
collapses due to its internal contradictions which are getting
sharper and sharper day by day, the Congress(I) will certainly
not stand aloof. I think this Government certainly cannot
survive,'' senior party leader, Mr. Madhavrao Scindia, said in an
interview today.
In the hour-long interview, he spoke on the party's attitude
towards a coalition government at the Centre, maintaining that
the Congress ``graph'' would climb after the Assembly elections
in five States because the people were realising that it alone
had the experience to run the country.
Asked whether he expected equations to change in Parliament after
the elections, Mr. Scindia said reports from Assam and Kerala
were ``very positive'' and the AIADMK-Congress alliance in Tamil
Nadu was making ``good progress''. The Congress-Trinamool
Congress tie-up in West Bengal was emerging as a strong rival to
the Left parties.
Declining to hazard a guess on how long the NDA Government would
last, he said, ``These are issues on which you cannot set a time
limit. But I would say this Government cannot survive too long.
Let us see what happens.'' In case the Government fell there were
possibilities of ``an alternative combination without the BJP or
it could be a reshuffle within the NDA or finally it could be
back to polls''.
