Green and peaceful
E VERYONE NEEDS heroes. More so to save the planet. The stage was
thus set for an interesting discussion when `Environmental Heroes
- Success stories of people at work for the earth' written by Mr.
Kevin Graham and Mr. Gary Chandler, at the Consulate General of
the United States.
Dr. Nanditha Krishna, Honorary Director of the C.P.Ramaswami
Aiyar Foundation, in the chair as the moderator said the book
showcased the processes of clean environmental technologies. It
had however not discussed motivation as a factor in aiding
ecological protection.
Representatives from academia, Government departments, NGOs,
lawyers and media were there, and there was some sparring on what
constitutes good practice for sustainable development.
Ideas on several issues including awareness of the need to
protect the environment, the country's problems in implementing
ecologically sound plans, availability of funds for conservation
programmes, patenting and turning ideas into reality were thrown
up.
The book talks of managing trash, composting, recycling paper and
plastic, remedies for oil spills, solving problems of water and
air pollution.
Giving a bit of perspective, Mr. R. Madison Conoley, Vice Consul
for Public Affairs zeroed in on pollution as a great threat to
human health and the need to bring down pollution levels.
Hail America !
