Five ULFA militants killed in encounters

GUWAHATI, MAY 6. Five hardcore ULFA militants, including a district commander, were killed in separate encounters with security forces and another injured while a NDFB militant was nabbed in Assam, official sources said today.

Security forces spotted a group of ULFA militants hiding inside a hut at Pathacharkuchi area of Barpeta district and challenged them but were fired upon. The troops retaliated and in the ensuing encounter four militants, including ULFA's Barpeta district commander Nageshwar Kalita, were killed on the spot last night.

The security forces recovered three AK-47 rifles, two Chinese grenades and 270 rounds of ammunition from the spot.

Another hardcore ULFA militant, responsible for the recent killings in the state, was shot dead by security forces near Gohpur in Sonitpur district today.

The militant was identified as Abhijit Sarma and a 9 mm carbine with ammunition was recovered. Sarma along with a group of ten cadres had been sent from Bhutan to disrupt polls.

An ULFA militant was seriously injured in an encounter with police at Fatashil Ambari area in Guwahati while two others were apprehended and two managed to escape.

A NDFB militant was nabbed today with a 12 bore gun in Kokrajhar district.
