BALCO stir ends
By Aarti Dhar
RAIPUR, MAY 8. The striking employees of the Bharat Aluminium
Company Limited will resume work tomorrow following an agreement
between the trade unions and the management at Korba this
evening.
The agreement was signed late tonight after the Supreme Court
expressed displeasure over the attitude of the trade unions.
Following this, the unions approached the management. As per the
agreement, the workers, including the casual labourers, will get
an advance of two months' salary. There would be victimisation or
retrenchment.
Mr. Brahma Singh, president of the BALCO Bachchao Samyukt
Samiti, said any remaining issue would be sorted out after the
final verdict of the Supreme Court.
Over 7,000 workers had gone on strike on March 2 after the Centre
sold 51 per cent of its shares to Sterlite Industries, a private
company. The workers had the support of the Chhatisgarh
Government.
