Great chance to set things right: Wright
BANGALORE, MAY 11. Its dismal record abroad is a permanent worry
for Indian cricket. However the team coach John Wright refuses to
be cowed down. ``I look it as a great opportunity (the Zimbabwe
tour) to set things right. It will be part of our goal. I don't
know the reasons behind India's poor show abroad but I will ask
the players in the camp,'' he said.
Wright is all set for the six-day conditioning camp commencing at
the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Sunday. ``The probables will
arrive here tomorrow,'' Wright said. He has kept himself busy by
keeping a close eye on the National Cricket Academy (NCA) wards.
Overseas statistics notwithstanding the future holds hope with
the NCA and Zonal Academies aiming to bolster the reserve
strength. ``The Academies will create a way for the reserves to
push into the National squad. And in what I have seen here I am
impressed with the trainees' attitude. Their work ethic is
good,'' Wright said.
The coach of the junior team, Roger Binny was also in agreement.
``Some of the academy boys have already pushed into the National
team. What the NCA and Zonal Academies will do eventually is that
it will make the players look tough and strong,'' Binny said.
Binny is among those few who savoured an Indian victory abroad.
He was part of Kapil Dev's World Cup winning team in 1983 and
later engineered India's 1986 Test series victory in England.
``We need more tours for our junior cricketers. Otherwise once in
the senior team they are exposed to conditions abroad for the
first time and take time to settle down. We also need to work on
our pitches at the domestic level,'' Binny said.
He however struck an optimistic note and said, ``now that we have
won against Australia things can only look up.''
