'Baby-selling' orphanages warned
By Our Special Correspondent
BANGALORE, MAY 14. The Minister for Women and Child Welfare, Ms.
Motamma, said here today that action would be taken against
orphanages selling babies.
She told presspersons here that a survey would be conducted to
check the bona fides of institutions which indulged in selling
babies and licences of baby adoption centres would be cancelled,
if there were complaints of selling of babies. Report on large-
scale sale of girl babies in Gulbarga revealed that poverty had
forced the parents to do so. She said steps would be taken to
bring about socio-economic changes in the lives of poor people,
especially those in Lambani Tandas.
There was a need to launch awareness campaigns to educate the
people. People should volunteer to provide information about the
activities of adoption centres and orphanages, she said.
Referring to the working of the women development commissions and
boards, she said paucity of funds was a major drawback in
successfully running these boards. She urged the Centre to
provide funds and more powers (to the boards). The State
Government would write to the Centre in this regard.
Regarding the recent elections to the urban local bodies, Ms.
Motamma said the Congress had come out in flying colours by
securing majority in most of the urban local bodies and thanked
the voters for the ruling party's victory.
Ms. Motamma also congratulated the Congress leaders of Kerala for
trouncing the LDF in the Assembly elections held on May 10.
