Throwing away a legacy
Sir, - This is with reference to the article, ``The renunciatory
ethic and its uses'' by Ms. Malini parthasarathy (May 14). Kudos
to the people of Tamil Nadu for rising to the occasion and
silently revolting against the fascist forces of the DMK-BJP
combine.
They have assertively displayed their strong commitment to
secularism and have shown that they are not prepared to give in
to the divisive policies of communalism.
Mr. Karunanidhi had committed a blunder by aligning with the
communal and fascist BJP. In his keenness to save his Government
from being dismissed by the BJP Government and in order to retain
just three ministerial berths at the Centre, he not only lost
five years of his rule but also his long cherished philosophy and
principle of a casteless society.
Lust for power had induced the brinkmanship and ultimately he had
to pay the heavy price of losing power.
As a matter of fact, he has forgotten that what matters is not
the ultimate game of seizing or retaining power but a question of
being recorded in history as a man and a party who struggled for
a noble cause and stood steadfast by it through thick and thin.
On the other hand, Mr Karunanidhi so meekly surrendered to the
Hindutva forces against whom he had fought so boldly for half a
century.
Ms Malini Parthasarathy has rightly pointed out that the DMK owes
a good part of its defeat to the inexplicable Faustian bargain it
struck with the Hindutva forces, which involved its throwing away
the legacy of the Dravidian movement - its platform of social
justice and secularism.
