AGP-BJP ties will continue: Mahanta

GUWAHATI, MAY 15. Notwithstanding reservations from a section of the BJP, the AGP president and Assam Chief Minister, Mr. P.K. Mahanta, today said his party's alliance with the BJP would continue and charged the Congress with ``using insurgent activists'' to win the elections.

``Our association with the BJP will continue as asserted by the BJP president, Mr. Jana Krishnamurty,'' Mr. Mahanta told reporters here. Commenting on the BJP State unit secretary, Mr. Sanjib Goswami's remarks that time had come for his party to review the tie-up with AGP following dismal performance of the coalition in Assembly polls, Mr. Mahanta said ``Mr. Goswami's statement is the opinion of an individual and not of the party.''

``In several constituencies the AGP workers and supporters were threatened and warned not to report about such threats,'' he alleged.

Referring to the apprehensions made by the Congress before the polls that the AGP would indulge in rigging, he said ``the recent trends of results have shown that the truth lies elsewhere''. He displayed two ballot papers which were allegedly used for rigging by that party to corroborate his views.

The AGP president also accused the Congress of ``violating the code of conduct and using money power to win the election.''
