WB nod for road development project

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, MAY 20. The World Bank has accorded
sanction for the Rs.1,350-crore project for the development of
1,650 km of State Highways, main district roads and 105 km of
inland waterways in the State.
The work on the roads and canals to be covered under the project
will be taken up from October this year and it will be executed
by the Public Works Department.
A team of officials led by Mr. Steen Lund Bay of the World Bank
called on the Chief Minister, Mr. A.K. Antony, at his office in
the Secretariat to evaluate and discuss the proposed project.
An official release said the Chief Minister told the delegation
that the project was very important for the State as it involves
the development of the roads and inland waterways.
Kerala is the third State in the county to get World Bank
assistance for the development of roads and inland waterways.
The World Bank team which called on Mr. Antony included the
financial expert, Mr. Balakrishna Menon, the environmental
expert, Mr. Kapoor, and Ms. M. Singh, noted sociologist. The
Principal Secretary (PWD), Mr. Babu Jacob, and the Chief
Engineer, Mr. R. Murukesan, also were present.
