Music for a cause
IT WAS a 12-hour non-stop music nite that had a crowd sitting
prim and proper. No raving, hysterical, screaming teenies, but
what you had was families tuned in to a religious frequency.
The night was a Christian music show organised by the Musi-Care
Cultural and Charitable Trust (MCCT) last week at the Christ
Church Campus, Anna Salai. And it was a free show to boot.
Jollee Abraham, its founder, had roped in some of the great names
in the Tamil music industry. M.S.Viswanathan was there, as were
Jikki, P.B.Srinivas, L.R.Easwari, P.Susheela, Yesudas and
Minmini.
Kicking off the show at 6 p.m. was MSV with an extempore
composition of a song that set the tone for the rest of the
night, which went on till 6 a.m. next day.
Yesudas and Minmini pitched in a few religious songs in
Malayalam, while the others picked songs from yesteryear Tamil
Christian numbers. L.R.Easwari brought in her style and
versatility to her melodious songs while Minmini was out with her
best for a few Malayalam songs. There were quite a few choral
presentations too, in both English and Tamil.
Then came choirs in English and Tamil led by Dr.Shyam Joseph,
followed by Gospel singers like Hema John, Sasi Rekha and Esther
Baby taking the stage. On show was also, ten-year-Reshma
J.Abraham, who sang with such ease, that it seems that her
musician father has been grooming her with care for a while.
The show also included as part of its programme, giving away of
wheel chairs, tri-cycles, crutches, walkers and sewing machines
to the needy.
According to the organisers, the show attracted a 7,000-strong
audience. For Jollee Abraham, it was a long-time fulfilled, and
now he plans for the nite to be an annual event. He says that it
was a dream come true. ``I have been thinking about this for
quite a while. But then something or the other did not work. Now
everything has fallen into place. May be, everything happens at
the appointed time,'' he says.
