Ceasefire off, Musharraf invited
In a major shift of strategic gears, the
Vajpayee Government today aborted the `Ramzan initiative' in
Jammu and Kashmir and has revoked the `ceasefire' (non-initiation
of combat operations). More significantly, it decided to invite
the Pakistan Chief Executive, Gen. Pervez Musharraf, to visit
India ``at his early convenience'', in pursuance of the Lahore
Declaration and the Shimla Agreement.
Pak. response positive
Pakistan's military regime, apparently caught
unawares by New Delhi's proposed invitation to Chief Executive
Gen. Pervez Musharraf, is most likely to respond positively. And
if it does so, it will be despite all the pressure from within.
GoM for new security setup
An inter-ministerial group on defence reforms
has recommended a new national security architecture in which the
role of defence forces in policy formulation has been enhanced.
'Brajesh will continue to hold dual charge'
The Government today clarified that the
Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister, Mr. Brajesh Mishra,
would continue as the National Security Adviser in the
foreseeable future.
Godbole quits, relents later
Mr. Madhav Godbole, who heads the truncated
renegotiation committee to re-work the deal with the Enron-
sponsored Dabhol Power Company (DPC) today quit in protest
against Mr. Sharad Pawar's remark that the panel should have a
``positive approach'' failing which ``I wonder how results would
be achieved'' and, hours later, on persuasion by the entire
Maharashtra Cabinet, decided not to press his resignation.
Air India MD suspended
The Government today suspended the Air India
Managing Director, Mr. Michael P. Mascarehans, on charges of
corruption and handed over the case to the CBI.
Quo warranto petitions against Jayalalitha
The swearing-in of Ms. Jayalalitha as the
Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu by the Governor, Ms. Fatima Beevi,
on May 14 has been challenged in the Supreme Court by two
advocates in public interest litigation (PIL) petitions.
Aziz returns from Pak. amid drama
Police fired in the air and burst teargas
shells at Lal Chowk here to disperse a procession protesting the
``arrest'' of senior All-Party Hurriyat Conference leader, Sheikh
Abdul Aziz, who returned from Pakistan today. A few hundred Aziz
supporters had arrived in a number of vehicles at the Airport
Road to receive him, but were denied entry by police and asked to
``go back''.
Only the tip of the iceberg: Condon report
The much-awaited report on match-fixing in
cricket describes Indian betting industry as ``the engine room
which has powered and driven cricket corruption,'' and says that
the public knowledge of the extent of corruption is ``only the
tip of the iceberg.''
