Air India MD suspended
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MAY 23. The Government today suspended the Air India
Managing Director, Mr. Michael P. Mascarehans, on charges of
corruption and handed over the case to the CBI.
Mr. Mascarehans had been indicted by an internal probe carried
out by the Civil Aviation Ministry.Mr. J.N. Gogoi, deputy
managing director, will officiate as MD till further orders.
While refusing to comment on the suspension, the Civil Aviation
Minister, Mr. Sharad Yadav, reportedly said that it was his
endeavour to clean up AI.
Corruption at top level had cost Air India, a whooping Rs. 350
crores, sources said, attributing Mr. Mascarehans' suspension to
both indictment of AI by the Comptroller and Auditor-General and
the Chief Vigilance Officer of the Ministry.
