Govt. to absorb special teachers

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD, MAY 23. The fruits of labour are sweet. Ask the special teachers and they would vouch for it. But, it took 10 long years before they realised their dreams.

The special teachers, who have been working for a meagre sum of Rs.398 a month would be absorbed as secondary grade teachers. According to a statement issued by the Director, School Education, 912 meritorious candidates among the petitioners in DSC-1989 would be appointed as teachers as per the High Court orders and the agreement reached between the Cabinet Sub- Committee and the JAC of Employees, Teachers and Workers.

Their struggle began 10 years ago when they had qualified in the District Selection Committee examination for recruitment of teachers. Since they figured low in the merit list, the Government appointed them as special teachers without a scale after an year of the DSC and that too on an adhoc basis.

The earlier practice was that there were a minimum of three merit lists of candidates and recruitments were made as and when vacancies arose based on their rankings. Thereby, those with lesser ranks also stood a chance.

However, the Government scrapped the system and stipulated that only one merit list would be drawn based on the number of vacancies that were being filled up. Despite the new system, the special teachers were appointed to fill in a few vacancies that were left.

The A.P. Special Teachers' Association thanked the Government for responding positively to their long struggle. The Joint Council of Teachers' Associations and the Panchayat Raj Teachers Union also welcomed the decision.
