Chairpersons soon for academies

BANGALORE, MAY 25. The Minister of State for Kannada and Culture, Ms. Rani Satish, said here today that chairpersons and members to seven academies in the State would be announced soon.

She told presspersons that so far 1,000 applications had been received and they were being shortlisted. The final selection would be made before June 13, when the terms of these bodies expired. Ms. Satish said that the Government had decided to enhance funds for these academies from this year with the Chief Minister, Mr. S.M.Krishna, agreeing in principle (to this).

She said that a memorial to the renowned poet, Sarvagna, would be constructed at Ablur, near Haveri, at a cost of Rs.46 lakhs. A memorial to Veeraraja would be built in Madikeri in Kodagu at a cost of Rs.16 lakhs.

Buddhist stupas

To a question about the finding of Buddhist articles of faith, including a number of miniature stupas, bells and small icons with Pali inscriptions at Rajagudda village in Doddaballapur (from where she hails), Ms. Satish said that excavations were still on.

The discovery was made while digging soil as it had become barren. After the Buddhist remains were found, a full-scale excavation was started.
