LG begins PC assembling
By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, MAY 25. LG Electronics today announced the beginning
of its PC assembly line in an attempt to strengthen its
information technology business in India. The company is
targeting a market share of 31 per cent in the PC monitor segment
by 2001 and 35 per cent by 2002.
LG has invested $10 million in the PC assembly line plant at its
existing facility in Greater Noida. It has a capacity of 3.5 lakh
units that can be upgraded to 5 lakh units. It will initially
focus on the smaller 15 inch and 17 inch monitors. These are said
to be the fastest growing segment in India although worldover
users are moving away to bigger monitors. LG has targeted sales
of 5 lakh PC monitors this year and hopes to achieve a turnover
of Rs. 500 crores from this segment, up from Rs. 240 crores last
year.
In an attempt to enter the higher-end market, the company is
planning to launch its PC notebooks and DVD and CD writers. LG is
in talks with complementary organisations in the computer
hardware segment like Seagate, Intel, Logitech to offer package
deals to their customers. With talks being in the final stages,
the packages should be available by mid-June this year.
