Beeran is dead

KOZHIKODE, MAY 31. The State president of the Indian National League (INL) and former Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) leader and five-time MLA, Mr. U.A. Beeran, died at Kottakkal, near here, this morning. He was 76.

He was elected to the State Assembly for the first time in 1970 from Malappuram constituency. He was elected for a second time to the Assembly from Tanur in 1977 and had represented his debut constituency of Malappuram once again in 1980 election. He made it to the Assembly from Tirur in 1982 and for a last and fifth time from Tirurangadi in the 1991 election.

Mr. Beeran, better known as Beeran Sahib, was the Education Minister for a few months when the late C.H. Mohammedkoya had to step down from the post consequent on invalidating his election in 1978. However, CH took over again when his election was validated by the Supreme Court. Beeran Sahib was the Minister for Food and Civil Supplies from 1982 to '87.

Consequent on the formation of the INL in 1995, Mr. Beeran was the State president of the breakaway party. However, due to ailment, he was not active in politics since '97. Though he held the post of the State president, the INL working president was officiating for all purposes.

A native of Kottakkal, Beeran Sahib began his career in the armed forces as a non-commissioned clerk in 1943 till 1950. He also served in the British Military Administration in Malaysia and Indonesia. He was also the Assistant Editor of `Chandrika', the mouth-piece of IUML, when C.H. Mohammedkoya was its Editor. He also held the post of the State general secretary of the IUML for a couple of years in the late Sixties. He was the State organising secretary of IUML in 1987.

The body of Beeran Sahib was buried on the Palapra mosque premises in Kottakkal in the evening.

He is survived by his wife, Ms. A.P. Kadeejabi, and six children, including two daughters.
