Hope for peace
Sir, - Mr. Atal Behari Vajpayee's invitation to Gen. Pervez
Musharraf has brought a great relief for all peace loving Indians
and Pakistanis who were separated 50 years ago. The new
generation in both the countries has realised that the strength
of India and Pakistan lies in mutual peace.
Right from the day he took charge, Gen. Musharraf sounded sincere
and his speeches were more dignified than any politician's. With
the present negotiator being a military general, who means what
he says, there is a hope for peace.
The only fear the common man has is the sabotaging of this peace
process by political parties and other vested interests.
Sundaram,
Chennai
Sir, - While it was a surprise that the Prime Minister invited
Gen. Musharraf for talks in India, equally surprising was the
positive response from the military ruler. The tone and tenor of
Gen. Musharraf's response indicates that he is serious in holding
talks. Both India and Pakistan would do well to shun animosity
and search for a path which is devoid of frictions.
Having received full support from political parties for his
initiative, Mr. Vajpayee is on a safe wicket. Gen. Musharraf
should seize this opportunity and lend credence to his oft-
repeated stance that he is prepared to talk to anyone, at any
level and at any place.
V.S. Jayaraman,
Chennai
