By Our Special Correspondent
NEW DELHI, JUNE 2. Sales figures released today by Maruti Udyog
(MUL) have confirmed that its car sales have improved in May as
compared to the dismal figures recorded in the previous month.
The company sold 32,264 cars (1,124 exported) in May as against
26,623 (including 180 exported) units in April. Its market share
stood at 62 per cent. The comparative figure in May last year was
25,798 units and the market share stood at 50.3 per cent.
Maruti performed particularly well in the B segment. In
particular, 7,037 units of Zen (including 685 exported) were sold
to take MUL's share in this fiercely contested segment to 45 per
cent. The flagship model Maruti 800 sold 12,631 units, the Omni
5,318 units, Wagon-R 2,296 units and the Esteem 1,106 units.
As many as 3,268 units of the recently launched Alto and 169 high
end Baleno cars were also sold during May. In addition, Maruti
sold 479 units of Gypsy in the multi-utility vehicle category.
