Boys outsmart girls
By Our Staff Reporter
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, JUNE 3. With a bit of suspense and drama, the
Commissioner for Entrance Examinations (CEE), Mr. K. J. Alphonse,
today declared the results of the entrance examination for the
engineering courses in the State, in what he said was a `world-
record' time.
Mr. Alphonse officially declared the results at a press
conference held at the Government Guest House, Thycaud, by
handing over a CD to ``a randomly selected candidate'', Mr. U.
Jayakrishnan.
A few minutes later, the CEE, in what he described as ``my own
style'', revealed that it was Mr. Jayakrishnan himself who was
the first rank-holder.
Mr. Jayakrishnan was a student of the ISC course at the Loyola
School, Thiruvananthapuram. He secured 94.7 per cent in the
entrance examination.
The second rank has been secured by Mr. S. Sandeep, a student of
the CBSE course at the Vimalagiri Public School, Ernakulam, while
the third rank went to Mr. Anil Vijayan, who did his CBSE course
at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Thrissur.
These candidates have secured 92.9 and 90.3 per cent respectively
in the examination.
Of the 35,122 candidates who registered, 34,381 took the entrance
examination. Of these, 56.9 per cent are male candidates. A total
of 33,309 candidates have figured in the rank list.
Candidates who have not scored at least 10 marks in each paper
have been excluded from the rank list.
The largest number of candidates, 6,323, had Thiruvananthapuram
as their examination centre while the second largest number,
5,249, appeared from Ernakulam. It was the Kerala University that
presented the largest number of candidates, 6,203, while the
Mahatma Gandhi University followed with 4,339 candidates.
There were 8,250 candidates from the CBSE/ISC stream. The top
three ranks have gone to students from these courses. The
entrance examination was held at 103 venues in all the 14 revenue
districts of the State.
After a committee of experts examined the question papers for the
engineering examination, it was found that certain questions were
either out of syllabus, wrongly worded or having more than one
correct answer.
These questions were deleted from the evaluation process and the
CEE decided to grant full marks to all candidates irrespective of
whether the candidates attempted the question or not.
``This year, a decision was taken not to invite reactions from
the public on the answer key. Last year, there was an allegation
that the questions were prepared by those who had no connection
with the subjects.
This year, the question papers were prepared only by Plus Two
teachers and each question was cross-checked by five eminent
teachers from all over the country,'' the CEE pointed out.
The questions that were so deleted were: Physics and Chemistry:
Version A1-7,27, 49 and 53; Version A2-20, 40, 62 and 66; Version
A3-2,28,48 and 70, A4-15,37,41 and 67. Mathematics: Version B1-
14, 56,63,73, 101 and 114; Version B2-6,26,68,75,85 and 113.
Version B3-10,17,27,55,68 and 88 and in Version B4, the questions
deleted were, 31, 38, 76,89 and 109.
All the details regarding the 55 SC/ST candidates have been
forwarded to the Vigilance Office, KIRTADS, for a detailed
inquiry regarding the genuineness of the candidates' claims.
The results of these candidates are currently being withheld. The
category/ community-wise list based on the provisional rank list
published today will be published by the CEE in due course.
As of now, there are 7,779 seats for the various engineering
courses in the 41 colleges spread across the State. Sanction has
been granted for 18 colleges more with a minimum of 240 seats
each in various branches.
Thus, the total seats available this time will be not less than
12,099.
The Commissioner said that he had been able to declare the
results so fast due to the committed work put in by his staff.
``Some of the credit comes to me while most of it goes to my
officers at the Commissionerate. Next year, the results will come
out faster,'' he said.
In reply to a question, Mr. Alphonse said that the results of the
medical entrance examination would be declared shortly.
