By Our Staff Reporter

KOZHIKODE, JUNE 3. Following the killing of Inthullathil Binu (25), CPI(M) activist, at Kallachi yesterday, instances of large scale violence have been reported from Theruvanparambhu. According to sources, following the cremation of Binu in the evening, there were major attacks on shops in the area and hurling of bombs. At least 15 houses were gutted.

Violence was reported to have been sparked off when those in the funeral procession attacked the onlookers. A counter-attack is believed to have followed. Police hurled grenades to control the mob.

Incidentally, Binu was an accused in a case of alleged physical attack on a woman and her daughter at Theruvanparabhu near Nadapuram a couple of months back. Binu was stabbed to death on Saturday evening by assailants who had come in a group at the taxi stand in Kallachi, after hurling bombs and creating a scare. He was the driver of a taxi jeep.

A hartal was observed in the Vadakara taluk today following a call by the LDF district committee to protest Binu's killing. Vehicles remained off the road and road blocks and stopping of vehicles were reported from Valliapalli. A prohibitory order is in force in Nadapuram, Purameri and adjoining areas in view of the tense situation. An all-party peace meet was held in Kasaragod district.

The Muslim League office at Azhiyur was attacked. A bus shelter put up by the party was also broken.

At Kunnamkode, N. Subbar (17), an IUML activist, was stabbed. In Narikkatur, a CPI(M) activist, Mr. P. Vinod, sustained injuries in a stabbing incident. Both have been admitted to the Vadakara Government Hospital.

A few others involved in instances of violence have been admitted to the Nadapuram Government Hospital.

Meanwhile, the body of Binu was handed over to the CPI(M) office-bearers and relatives after postmortem at the Kozhikode Medical College. His body was brought here from the Vadakara Taluk Hospital yesterday following the stabbing incident.

Those present at the time of handing over of the body were Mr. Binoy Viswam, MLA, Mr. Matahi Chacko, MLA, the CPI (M) district secretary, Mr. M. Kelappan, Mr. M.A. Kanaaran, Mr. Balan Vaidyar and the district panchayat president, Ms. M.K. Nalini.

The body was taken in an open vehicle to Nadapuram. Heavy police bandobust was provided.

Meanwhile, Mr. E. Ahmed, MP and IUML national general secretary, has flayed the violence in Kasaragod district and termed it as a conspiracy hatched by the CPI (M).

The BJP State president, Mr. C.K. Padmanabhan, wanted the Government to interfere and stop violence in North Kerala.
