Hizb bans grenade attacks in public places

By Shujaat Bukhari

SRINAGAR JUNE 6: The Hizbul Mujahideen has declared a ban on grenade attacks in busy public places. The ban comes after six civilians, including two women and a child, were killed in grenade attacks at Batmaloo and Kupwara in the last four days.

In a statement, the Hizb spokesman said the decision was taken at an emergency meeting of divisional commanders called by the chief commander, Mr. Abdul Majid Dar. The Hizb has appealed to other organisations not to carry out attacks in crowded places.

The Lashkar-e-Taiba has also expressed concern over the grenade attacks at public places. ``The LeT sees such attacks as criminal acts, as ordinary civilians are becoming the target,'' said the spokesman of the outfit. He said the LeT had constituted a special squad to identify the people responsible for such attacks. However, the Jaish-e-Mohammad has held the government agencies responsible for such activities and condemned them.

Seven militants killed

Security forces today killed seven militants of the Jaish-e- Mohammad in Surankot area of Poonch and shot dead four intruders. Two police constables were shot dead by the militants in Srinagar.

When militants opened fire outside the SMHS Hospital in Karan Nagar area, the two constables died on the spot. The LeT has claimed responsibility for the attack. The police, later, cordoned off the area and ransacked the shops.

In Sopore, two militants fired at the BSF personnel in Noorbagh when the latter cordoned off the area. The BSF retaliated and one militant was killed.
