Yadagirigutta temple burgled, watchman killed

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD, JUNE 6. The Laxmi Narasimha Temple at Yadagirigutta was burgled and one of its watchmen, Ram Bahadur, was stabbed to death by unidentified culprits in the early hours of Wednesday. The intruders managed to break open the lock of the main `hundi,' but had to return empty handed as they could not reach collections at the bottom of the 8 feet hundi.

The burglary was noticed by priests, who opened the main door around 4 a.m. for performing the morning pujas. Ram Bahadur's body was found in a pool of blood and immediately the police were alerted. The priests also noticed that the hundi near the sanctum sanctorum was broke open.

It was only last Thursday that the hundi collections were taken out and deposited in a bank. The Police said there was some collection in the hundi but since it was at the bottom the burglars could not collect it.

Based on the route taken by the sniffer dogs, the police arrived at the conclusion that the intruders could have come through an open ventilator of one of the rooms where `prasadam' is made every day. The ventilator could be accessed through steps from another side of the temple. Ram Bahadur, it was said, would remain inside the temple after the main doors are locked every day at 10 p.m.
