Mixed luck for Yasin Merchant
MUMBAI, JUNE 6. Yasin Merchant won a match and lost another at
the red and white Asian snooker chamionships in Karachi
yesterday.
However, his teammate Alok Kumar was in superb form notching up
two victories, according to information received here today.
Merchant started the day in great form routing young Abu Saim 4-
0. Saim who had notched up a creditable victory over Hong Kong's
Au Chi Wai yesterday, was expected to give Merchant a torrid
time. However, Merchant proved too hot to handle for Saim, as the
Pakistani went down tamely.
In Merchant's next match, Indonesian Teng Khee Sien stunned
everyone by taking the first two frames. However, Merchant came
back strongly with breaks of 53 and 42 in the third and followed
it up with a break of 42 in the fourth to restore parity.
He continued to prosper to take the lead in the fifth frame at 3-
2, only to lose the next two frames and with it the match to the
Indonesian.
Alok Kumar, on the other hand had no such problems as he started
off in style giving a trashing to Malaysian Lee Hwa Meng, winning
4-0. In his next match, Alok continued in the same vein against
Pakistan's Mohd Yousuf.
After sharing the first two frames, the Indian was at his best.
The Pakistani delayed the inevitable by pocketing the fifth, only
to see Alok Kumar come back stronger to pocket the sixth and with
it the match at 4-2.
