Galbraith presented with Padma Vibhushan
CAMBRIDGE (U.S.), JUNE 12. Noted economist, Mr. John Kenneth
Galbraith, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to India, has been
presented with Padma Vibhushan.
The Indian Ambassador, Mr. Lalit Mansingh, presented the award to
Mr. Galbraith, who served from 1961 and 1963 under the late U.S.
President, John F. Kennedy, at his residence here.
The award is India's second highest civilian award and it is
rarely given to foreigners.
``Nothing gives me more pride than looking back on my two stays
on what we will one day call not only the world's largest
democracy, but also the most successful democracy both
politically and economically,'' Mr. Galbraith, 92, told a small
gathering.
``You were a great ambassador and we remember you with fondness
and love'', Mr. Mansingh said.
Mr. Galbraith is famous for developing the Keynesian and post-
Keynesian economics and for his involvement in American politics.
He taught at the Harvard for 52 years and has received 45
honorary degrees from institutions worldwide.
