Galbraith presented with Padma Vibhushan

CAMBRIDGE (U.S.), JUNE 12. Noted economist, Mr. John Kenneth Galbraith, who served as the U.S. Ambassador to India, has been presented with Padma Vibhushan.

The Indian Ambassador, Mr. Lalit Mansingh, presented the award to Mr. Galbraith, who served from 1961 and 1963 under the late U.S. President, John F. Kennedy, at his residence here.

The award is India's second highest civilian award and it is rarely given to foreigners.

``Nothing gives me more pride than looking back on my two stays on what we will one day call not only the world's largest democracy, but also the most successful democracy both politically and economically,'' Mr. Galbraith, 92, told a small gathering.

``You were a great ambassador and we remember you with fondness and love'', Mr. Mansingh said.

Mr. Galbraith is famous for developing the Keynesian and post- Keynesian economics and for his involvement in American politics. He taught at the Harvard for 52 years and has received 45 honorary degrees from institutions worldwide.
