Banyan breaks into Mauritius market

By K. T. Jagannathan

CHENNAI, JUNE 16. Nascent Banyan Networks Pvt. Ltd., a one-stop IT network solution provider, has landed a significant order from Data Communications Ltd., an Internet Service Provider (ISP) in Mauritius, to supply multi-purpose Internet communication system (MICS). MICS is a sort of a videshi version of DIAS (Direct Internet Access System) that the company is selling in the domestic market.

In terms of value, the order may not be much - just Rs. 2.50 crores. Yet, it must please the Banyan mandarins. For, it comes in the wake of the company's maiden participation in the annual CeBeit Fair at Hannover in Germany sometime in March this year. The initial order is for the supply of 1,000 lines. This will scale up once DCL is able to successfully install MICS systems in that country. According to Mr. R. Sridharan, Vice-President (Marketing), what Banyan is offering is a ``cost-effective, workable and ideal solution for developing countries." The company has developed the product based on HDSL (high-speed digital subscriber line) technology. However, most of the systems that had already been deployed across the globe - around 20 million lines - had relied on ASDL (asymmetrical digital subscriber line) technology.

The Mauritius order could prove an useful password for Banyan to access the African markets which are still developing and hence a potential market to sell MICS.

Be it MICS or its domestic version - DIAS. They are located in close proximity to telephone exchanges. They primarily facilitate simultaneous transfer of voice and data along the existing copper line. A DSL modem is all that is required at the customer-end. Essentially, this system separates the data from voice and sends them direct to the gateways.
